The 150th Open is Set to Begin at the ‘Home of Golf’

The oldest and most prestigious major in golf is set to tee off 14th July 2022. Not only is it the 150th staging of The Open, it is back at the Old Course at St Andrews, a course affectionately known to many as ‘the home of golf’ for the first time in five years.

The Open is a true test for golf’s greatest players. Staged on the most iconic courses in the UK, golf’s original major always delivers exciting triumphs and crushing disasters in equal measure – just ask Jean Van de Velde.

So, what makes this year at St. Andrews so special?

Golf has been played at St. Andrew’s for over 500 years. In 1873 The Open staged its first appearance at the Old Course. 2022 marks the 30th time The Open will be played at this iconic venue that features 112 bunkers (including ‘Hell’ and ‘The Coffins’) and the 700-year-old Swilcan Bridge, which spans the 1st and 18th holes.

Here’s a look at some of the best St Andrews moments from over the years...

As the best players in the world begin to descend on Fife, we wait with eager anticipation to see who will be lifting this year’s Claret Jug. 15-time major winner Tiger Woods is set to be in the field, telling reporters earlier this week that he chose to withdraw from the U.S. Open last month in order to be fully rested and prepared for St. Andrew’s.

“This is a pretty historic Open that we are going to be playing. I’m lucky enough to be part of the past champions that have won there, and want to play there again, and I don’t know when they are ever going to go back while I’m still able to play at a high level,” said Woods. Adding, “I want to be able to give it at least one more run at a high level.”

Other exciting players to watch in the field this year will be Rory McIlroy, newly crowned U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick, Shane Lowry, Jon Rahm and defending champion Collin Morikawa.

If you aren’t one of the lucky fans to have tickets to the action in St. Andrews, you can still feel a part of this historic major.
