Adams Golf

Adams Golf

In 1987 Barney Adams acquired Dave Pelz Golf, renaming the business Adams Golf and quickly set about using his management expertise and love of the game to establish one of the most successful golf brands, respected worldwide by amateurs and pros alike.

Starting out with a focus on custom fit, Adams Golf offered players a unique perspective on what it would take to make an individual game succeed. Carefully building a loyal and firm fan base while using the latest in superior customising technology. In the mid-1990s the company released its Tight Lies fairway wood, employing what is now known as the “upside down” head design. The club was a huge hit and led to incredible commercial success for the brand.

Adams Golf was now a household name in American and the founder set about taking on the rest of world. In 1998 Adams got a little help in the form of 6-time major winner, Sir Nick Faldo. A year later they also signed on Tom Watson, the 2014 U.S. Ryder Cup Captain and multiple major title-holder. By the year 2000, Adams Golf was producing new and exciting lines like the Faldo Series wedges and branching out to include the Tight Lies 2 Driver as well as their original fairway woods.

During this time the company also began to tackle the world outside the United States. Setting up subsidiaries in both the UK and Japan. In 2012 TaylorMade adidas Golf acquired Adams Golf, with the brand setting its sites on bringing the game to a broader range of players.

When asked about his plans for Adams, TaylorMade’s CEO Ben Sharpe told Golf Digest in November 2014, “It’s going to be different, but will still be able to be played by the best players in the world. Their hybrid technology is fantastic, and we will continue to develop that. But Adams can stand for more than just golf products. It can stand for movement to introduce a new demographic of people who want to play rather than compete.”

Sharpe explained, “I think there is an opportunity to move Adams into that fun, friendly environment, a social, easy-to-play and put-a-smile-on-your-face brand, and keep TaylorMade as the zero to 4-handicap, aspirational, tour-validated, great-technology brand. And that's the value of having both.”
