Rory McIlroy Secures the PGA Championship for the Second Time

If there were any doubts before, yesterday’s incredible performance by Rory McIlroy at the PGA Championship more than assured golf fans he is well and truly back at the top of his game.

The 25-year-old battled it out on Sunday fighting off charges from the likes of Phil Mickelson, Henrik Stenson and Rickie Fowler to secure his third consecutive victory.  As well as claiming his second major in a row, after last month’s Open Championship win.

“To win it in this fashion and this style, it means a lot,” McIlroy told reporters yesterday.  “It means that I know that I can do it.  I know that I can come from behind.  I know that I can mix it up with the best players in the world down the stretch in a major and come out on top.”

McIlroy now joins an elite group of just five golfers, including Tiger Woods, Nick Price, Walter Hagen and Padraig Harrington, to have won the Open Championship and the PGA Championship in the same year.

A feat even his fellow golfers were impressed with.  After losing by one stroke yesterday Mickelson told reporters McIlroy was, “Better than everyone else right now.”

While fellow Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell commented, “It's beginning to look a little Tiger-esque I suppose.”  With his fourth major under his belt McIlroy now only needs a win at The Masters in order to complete his career grand slam.
