A Glimpse into Greenkeeping of the Future

A Glimpse into Greenkeeping of the Future
There has been a lot of conversation about greenkeepers not being paid a fair wage in recent months. With golf just starting to come out of a dip, golf clubs have been trying all sorts of membership schemes as well as a range of pay and play concepts. This has meant there isn't enough cash coming in to filter through to employees pockets.

Something that could revolutionise the industry is robotic mowers. As you can see in the video below the technology has been perfected and is already being used at some clubs. If they have developed such a tool to be used on the pristine greens, then you would imagine that it would only be a matter of time until they can program fairway and rough mowers as well.

For those thinking this is the end of the greenkeeper I wouldn't be so hasty! As you can see in the video this merely allows the green keeper to do their other roles at the same time. You would still need someone to supervise or work close by whilst the machines operate for health and safety reasons.

We don't know what the impact would be if any. It might mean losing one member of staff to balance the books but that we will have to wait and see.

What are your thoughts on this subject? Will this help golf courses cut costs? Will it help greenkeepers with their job or will it mean there are fewer jobs for greenkeepers?
