It was the craziest ending to The Masters we’ve seen for a long time. What seemed like a slam-dunk for returning champion
Jordan Spieth quickly unraveled on the back nine, with the Texan quadruple-bogeying the 12th after landing two shots in the water. Spieth’s disastrous final holes left him with a one-over 73 and a tie for second place.
Willett quickly jumped on Spieth’s demise, taking the lead following the epic meltdown to card a final round 5-under 67 to win his first major title. The 28-year-old was ecstatic and even a little shocked by his Augusta victory.
“There is happiness, exhilaration, everything,” Willett told reporters afterwards. “It’s not as if I slowly crept into the lead. Usually you are to-ing and fro-ing, but for Jordan to drop four shots on one hole? You just can’t understand it.”
Adding, “You just can’t describe the emotions and feelings. We all go out there and try to play good golf, and ultimately somebody has to win the tournament. Fortunately, today was my day.”
Yesterday was certainly Willett’s day, but the Callaway golfer very nearly missed the whole tournament, as his first child was due to be born on Sunday. Luckily for Willett his baby boy arrived a week early. With his wife and child safe at home Willett headed to Augusta and the rest is history!
