Ireland’s Shane Lowry wins The Open Championship at Royal Portrush

It was an exhilarating end to an incredible week in Northern Ireland. On Sunday, Shane Lowry held his nerve on the links to win the 148th Open Championship, six-strokes ahead of Tommy Fleetwood.

“What a difference a year makes…”

Lowry began Sunday’s final round with a four-stroke lead. Despite a possible threat from Fleetwood, the Irishman was able to keep focused, dominating the links to earn his first major title. The 32-year-old is now the proud owner of the Claret Jug, a feat that probably didn’t seem possible to him a year ago.

“Golf is a weird sport and you never know what’s around the corner,” Lowry told reporters yesterday. “I sat in the car park in Carnoustie, almost a year ago right to this week, and I cried. Golf wasn’t my friend at the time. It was something that become very stressful and it was weighing on me and I just didn’t like doing it. What a difference a year makes.”
