Davis Love III is Ready to Take on Erin Hills but Not as a Player

He’s played in the U.S. Open 23 times, but today Davis Love III will walk around Erin Hills not as a competitor but as a caddie. Carrying the bag for his 23-year-old son Davis Love IV (Dru).

Dru will be making his major debut at the 2017 U.S. Open after qualifying as an alternate at a sectional qualifying round earlier this month. His 53-year-old dad failed to qualify for this year’s major but luckily that left him free to caddie for his son.

“I called him when we thought there was a chance I might get in and he asked me, ‘Who do you want to caddie?’ ’’ Dru told reporters.  “I said, ‘Well, obviously you.’ He told me, ‘This is your deal. This is your major. This is your career. Don’t pick me just because you think that’s what I would want.’

But the younger Love explained the decision to have his dad next to him this week was a total “no-brainer.”

“He’s played 23 U.S. Opens. He’s seen every single possible thing you can ever see on a golf course, so that was pretty much a no-brainer for me.’’

Good luck to Dru and here’s hoping his first pro appearance on the PGA Tour goes well!
