Sergio Garcia is the Masters Champion, Claiming his first Major Title

Sergio Garcia has finally gone and done it. After 74 major appearances the TaylorMade golfer has won his first major title at the 2017 Masters. Beating England’s Justin Rose in a sudden death playoff to finish at 9-under-par.
After 19 trips to the Masters Garcia finally joins his two mentors, Seve Ballesteros (who died in 2011) and Jose Maria Olazabal to become the third Spanish golfer to slip on the Green Jacket. Yesterday would have been Ballesteros’ 60th birthday, a coincidence not lost on Garcia.

“Seve did come into my mind today,” the 37-year-old told reporters after his win. “I’m sure he helped a little bit with some of those shots and some of those putts.” Adding, “To do it on Seve’s 60th birthday and to join him and Olazabal, my two idols in golf my whole life, it’s something amazing.”

Even Rose, who was disappointed to miss out on a second major title, couldn’t hold back his praise and happiness for his friend and Ryder Cup teammate.

“I’m disappointed, but hopefully it’s a Masters that is remembered fondly,” said Rose. “You don’t want to lose, but it hurt less to lose to him.”
The battle between Rose and Garcia on the final day made for a super exciting finish to the 81st Masters. With both players showing the grit and determination needed to secure a major title. But in the end Garcia was able to hold his nerve, making his winning putt all the more memorable.
