Victory Roundup – A Monday Hat-Trick and a New Number One

It was an exciting weekend of golf that spilled over into the beginning of the week. Meaning, we got to watch more than usual and loved every minute of it. Check out all the action from the weekend and see who got a hat-trick of wins and who the new world number one is.

Third Time’s a Charm...

Sergio Garcia is making up for a lack-lustre year with an incredible win at the Andalucia Valderrama Masters. Beating Shane Lowry by four-strokes to claim his third consecutive victory at the event and his first win of 2018.

Bad weather throughout the week forced the tournament to finish on Monday and be shortened to 54-holes. But that didn’t seem to bother El Niño, who battled his way to the top spot with a final round 69 and 12-under total.

“It’s amazing to be able to win here at Valderrama three times – it’s a dream come true,” Garcia told reporters afterwards. Adding, “This golf course is so challenging and for me to be able to go out there in the conditions we played in all week and shoot three rounds under par means a lot.”

Garcia began Monday’s play three-shots ahead of his nearest competition but a late surge from Lowry meant the Callaway Golf player needed to dig deep to maintain his lead.

“I knew the guys were going to be going after me. This golf course is the kind of course where if you’re a little bit off you can struggle. But if your game is on it gives you a lot of birdie opportunities.”

There’s a new #1 in Town…

Over in South Korea, a win at THE CJ CUP @ NINE BRIDGES means we have a new world number one!

The current PGA Tour Player of the Year, Brooks Koepka secured his 12th career win on Sunday and also managed to secure the number one ranking in the world. Despite a challenge from fellow American Gary Woodland during the final round, Koepka was able to hold his nerve. Finishing off the with a cool 8-under 64 for a 21-under total.

“I always felt like I was in control,” Koepka told reporters afterwards. Adding, “I felt like I was playing good and I felt like he [Woodland] played a great round, but I always felt like I was in control, which is a good feeling.”

This marks Koepka’s third win in 11 starts. Not a bad way to start off the season!

“I just need to keep winning. I feel like to win a few more regular TOUR events and then keep adding majors. I feel like my game’s set up for that,” said the already three-time major winner.
