Victory Roundup – A New World Number 1 and European Tour Redemption

It was a truly eventful weekend on Tour, both in the States and Down Under. The Genesis Open results gave us a new World Number One while the inaugural World Super 6 Perth gave another golfer his first win since 2013 as well as his European Tour card back. Check out the action from both Tours below and get the gear the pros are winning with at GolfOnline today!

After 47-weeks at the top Jason Day has finally been dethroned as the number one golfer in the world. With an incredible showing in Los Angeles over the weekend, American Dustin Johnson gained his 12th PGA Tour title at the Genesis Open and shot from number three in the rankings straight up to the top spot.

Inclement weather over the weekend forced Johnson to finish his third and fourth rounds on Sunday but that proved not to be an issue for the TaylorMade player. He was on form and finished with an impressive 17-under-267, five-strokes ahead of his nearest competition. But the newly crowned Number One knows he can’t be complacent.

“If you look at even the top 10 guys in the world, all of them are very, very good,” Johnson told reporters yesterday. Adding, “I’m going to have to keep working hard and keep playing well if I want to stay there.”

Over on the European Tour players attacked the new format at the inaugural World Super 6 Perth. Featuring 54 holes of stroke play with the traditional cut after two rounds, plus a final round six-hole match play shootout. In the end Australia’s own Brett Rumford won the tournament, beating Phachara Khongwatmai of Thailand 2 and 1, after leading by 5-strokes at the end of the first three rounds.

It was an emotional win for the 39-year-old who had lost his European Tour card after a rough season post an intestinal surgery. With his win in Perth yesterday the Titleist player is back on Tour and has secured his first title since 2013.

“It has been a pretty tough road last year and the year before that was even tougher with my surgery,” Rumford told reporters yesterday. “I only saw my daughters, my twin girls, for four weeks in six months and I sort of completely fell out of love with the game and my direction in life.” Adding, “But it’s really nice to get my tour card back and I feel I’ve got back my worth back as a golfer again.”
