South Korean golfer Si Woo Kim has become the youngest-ever winner of The Players Championship. Carding a bogey-free 69 on Sunday, the 21-year-old claimed a three-stroke victory over Louis Oosthuizen and Ian Poulter.
The Players might be over but the unofficial “fifth Major” brought all the excitement and drama you’d expect from TPC Sawgrass. Poulter, who just a few weeks ago thought he had lost his PGA Tour card, played the best we’ve seen of him in months. (Poulter’s last win was at the WGC – HSBC Champions in November 2012 and he hasn’t had a top-ten finish since the Puerto Rico Open in March 2016). Proving that despite a rough year that included a medical exemption for a foot injury, the 41-year-old isn’t ready to bow out of competitive play just yet.
“The last 18 months have been really miserable but I grew in confidence as the afternoon went on, and now I want to build on it and get back to the top of the game,” Poulter told reporters after Sunday’s round.
But the real star of the weekend was
TaylorMade player Kim who managed to hold his nerve among 48 of the world’s top-50 golfers to finish The Players with an incredible 10-under 278. Giving the 21-year-old his second PGA Tour victory and a hefty prize of $1.89 million. Along with title and money comes a five-year exemption on Tour and three-year exemption to play at the Masters. Pretty incredible for such a young player!
“I still can’t believe I’m the champion, and I’m the youngest champion,” said Kim. Adding, “I’m looking forward to working hard from now on.”
