Victory Roundup – Webb Simpson owns Sawgrass after difficult putting slump

On Sunday Webb Simpson gained his first PGA Tour title since 2013 and a whooping $1.98 million as he won The Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

The 32-year-old started Sunday seven-strokes clear of his nearest competition. While his final round wasn’t as pretty as his previous three, Simpson managed to hold off Tiger Woods and Danny Lee to claim an impressive four-shot victory.

“I am exhausted,” Simpson told reporters after his win. “It was a long day.” Adding, “I didn’t have my best stuff but it was good enough.”

Simpson’s performance at TPC Sawgrass was close to perfection and a huge turning point for the American who has really struggled recently after being forced to adjust his putting style when the anchored putter ban came into effect at the beginning of 2016. This weekend Simpson’s short game was definitely hot and proved the Titleist player has well and truly made it out of the slump.

“You get used to playing at a level that you know you’re capable of, and then you go a year or two years playing below that capability, and it starts to get at you,” Said Simpson after his win. “I just kept telling myself that if I throw in the towel and give up, I will never be successful. But if I stay at it, who knows?” Adding, “And I’m glad I did.”
