Thomas Pieters scored his third European Tour victory to become the 2016 Made in Denmark Champion. After a four-hour rain delay the 24-year-old stunned during the final round. Birdieing the last three holes in spectacular fashion to finish the day with a six-under 65 and beat Bradley Dredge by just one-stroke.
The Belgium’s latest win tops off an incredible month that has seen him narrowly miss out on a medal in Rio (he finished 4th) and a second place finish at the Czech Masters. The Callaway Apparel Ambassador is now expected to be one of Darren Clarke’s three Ryder Cup wild card picks when he makes the announcement later today.
“He [Clarke] has got plenty of good players to pick from, so if he doesn’t pick me, then so be it and I’ll work my butt off to get there in the next one,” Pieters told reporters after his win on Sunday.
Adding, “But I’ve done all I can now and I’m just really pleased with this win to be honest.”
On to The Barclays in America and it was Callaway player Patrick Reed’s turn to dazzle. The 26-year-old hasn’t scored a win since January 2015 but that didn’t stop him from owning Bethpage Black on Sunday. Despite a bogey on the final hole Reid still managed to finish one-shot ahead of Sean O’Hair and Emiliano Grillo.
Earning the Callaway golfer his fifth career win, ensuring him an automatic spot on next month’s U.S. Ryder Cup Team and catapulting him to number one in the FedEx Cup standings. Now that’s a good weekend!
Thomas Detry made history on the European Challenge Tour as he secured his first career win at the Bridgestone Challenge. The 23-year-old Belgium who went to university with Pieters in the States stunned with an incredible 29-under-par total. Finishing a whooping 12-strokes ahead of his nearest competition. Giving him the tour’s largest-ever winning margin.
“I am lost for words,” said Detry after his win on Sunday. “It has been such a long day; yesterday was as well. We’ve had rain, we’ve had delays, we’ve had everything and to win like that was pretty awesome.”
