In Gee Chun Becomes 7th South Korean U.S. Women’s Open Winner in 11 Years

In Gee Chun Becomes 7th South Korean U.S. Women’s Open Winner in 11 Years
South Korean golfer, In Gee Chun has well and truly made her professional mark, winning her U.S. Women’s Open debut in Lancaster, Pennsylvania on Sunday.

The 20-year-old took control of the final round, coming from 4-strokes behind the overnight leader to claim her first LPGA major victory by 1-stroke. A result Chun was more than satisfied with, evident from her ear-to-ear smile and giggling throughout interviews.

Sunday’s victory secured the young golfer’s fourth win this season.  A streak Chun looks poised to build upon. So what’s her secret for staying cool under major pressure, while playing some of the biggest names in the history of women’s golf?

“Just enjoy the game,” Chun told ESPN’s Michael Collins after her win.

The weekend’s final result marks the seventh time a South Korean player has won the U.S. Women’s Open in the last 11 years and makes for a pretty interesting reference for where the ladies game might be looking for their next superstar.  Chun is definitely a front-runner.

The 70th instalment of the major was a huge success.  With the Lancaster Country Club making the entire week a fun and enjoyable experience for both players and spectators.  In the end, it looks like the LPGA’s efforts to “Grow the Game” are definitely gaining speed with record attendance numbers in Pennsylvania last week reaching 134,016!

“The crowds have been amazing,” said last year’s winner, Michelle Wie.  “It’s been such a big crowd to play in front of. There is so much support and they were so excited to see us play.”
