Nike Turns Up Apparel Focus, Signing World Number One Jason Day

Earlier this week it was announced that Jason Day had struck an apparel deal with Nike Golf reportedly worth $10 million a year.

With the global brand announcing its exit from the golf equipment game over the summer, their future in the professional golf realm was left a bit ambiguous. At the time the brand insisted it was turning all of its focus to their golf apparel and golf shoe ranges.

“We’re committed to being the undisputed leader in golf footwear and apparel,” said Trevor Edwards, President of the Nike Brand at the time. Adding, “We will achieve this by investing in performance innovation for athletes and delivering sustainable profitable growth for Nike Golf.”

Signing the World Number One to wear their golf clothing, hats, shoes and gloves is definitely a step in the right direction and illustrates Nike has no intention of leaving the game.

The company still counts big names like Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods as brand ambassadors, but neither golfer has had much success in the last couple of seasons. Adding Day to their roster will help ensure Nike apparel is at the forefront come Sundays. A result every brand hopes to achieve.

Currently Day plays TaylorMade equipment and has an apparel deal with adidas. But just as Nike is pulling out of golf equipment manufacturing, TaylorMade/adidas is looking to sell parts of their golf division. While Day will continue to play with his TaylorMade clubs, the Australian’s apparel contract with adidas finishes at the end of the year.

Expect to see Day sporting some of the incredible Nike gear available at GolfOnline beginning early next year!
