Park Wins Over Matthew in Sudden-Death

Park Wins Over Matthew in Sudden-Death

This past Sunday saw South Korea’s Inbee Park win her second major of 2013 over Scotland’s Catriona Matthew at the Wegmans LPGA Championship in New York.

Heavy rains wiped out the first day of play on Thursday, leaving the women to squeeze the 3rd and 4th rounds into Sunday.  Park started out the day one stroke behind second-round leader, Morgan Pressel.  But things soon shifted with Park racking up four birdies and Pressel bogeying the 10th and 12th holes.

With six holes left in the final round Park had clearly pulled away from the pack holding a three-shot lead.  But trouble in the rough on the remaining holes meant she left herself open for Matthew to move in.

“The last I looked at the scoreboard, Inbee had a solid lead, so I was quite surprised when suddenly I looked at the leaderboard on 18 and two putts would get me in a playoff,” Matthew said.

Park bogeyed on holes 14, 16 and 18, forcing her into a playoff with the 19-year tour veteran.  She rallied and was able to come away with her 7th career win after sinking an 18-foot birdie putt on the 3rd hole.
