The Putting Under Pressure Circle Drill

The Putting Under Pressure Circle Drill
Here’s a little about me and what I have in store for the readers.

I'm going to be using my experience and everything I’ve learned and sharing it with the GolfOnline faithful customers in a series of instructional and fun drills and games.

It’s not going to be the normal boring technical advice you find all over the web, but instead fun and interesting ways to improve your golf that you probably won’t have tried before.

The devil is in the detail with this exercise. It is created to help you make crucial putts under pressure when it really matters.

To get the most out of this exercise, you need to make it as realistic as possible. So imagine you are out on the 17th green with a 4-foot putt for par when you're hanging on to a great score.

What you need:

  • A putter
  • 12 golf tees or ball markers
  • 4 golf balls
  • Putting green or Putting Mat
  • Putting cup

To set up:

  1. Place tees or ball markers in a circle on the green on the floor.
  2. The inner set of 4 markers is 2 foot from the hole, in a four-point divide.
  3. The next ring of 4 markers is an extra foot further away and the 3rd ring of 4 markers is another foot away.
  4. Place a ball on each of the inner markers to start the challenge.

How it Works:

Start on any of the four balls on the inner circle and work your way around. If you miss one of the balls you will need to replace them all and start again.

Remember to go through your pre-shot routine for each and every putt. Keeping the same rhythm and time spent on each putt will help you get into auto pilot. The less thinking you do and the more instinctive the better.

Once you have successfully completed the inside ring you then move the balls out to the second ring and repeat the process of putting.

If you were to miss one on this ring you have to start the drill back at the beginning again! Once you are out on the 4-foot putts you will really start to feel the pressure. The key is to maintain the pre-shot routine and focus.

By the time you get to the 12th, 13th and 14th putt, you will be feeling the pressure as to complete the challenge you need to get them all in consecutively.

Chris’s Top Tip:

I find a great thing to get in the habit of doing is once you have hit the putt to wait until you hear it hit the back of the hole. Doing this keeps your head and body still, which increases consistency.  Another good idea is to pick each ball out of the hole after you sink the putt. This creates a feeling that every time you hit a putt, you hole it - a great mindset to get into!

We want to make this series as interactive as possible so if you have any areas you would like me to cover please get in touch on any of our social media outlets or drop us an email and I would be happy to tailor something to your interests and needs.

Over the coming weeks I will be sharing with you some great games the pros use to sharpen their chipping and putting skills. These games are perfect to play with your mates before you go out in a medal or stapleford as they add that competitive element and pressure you find in a round out on the golf course.
