The R&A Getting a New and Royal Member

The R&A Getting a New and Royal Member
The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews yesterday announced seven new honorary female members including the Princess Royal, Dame Laura Davies and 10-time major winner Annika Sorenstam.

R&A captain George Macgregor said in a statement on the club’s website, “This is an historic day for the Club and we could not be more proud also to welcome women who have distinguished themselves in golf over many years and have been great players and champions.”

Adding, “They are extremely worthy additions to our roll of honorary members and will become ambassadors for the Club as they have been for the sport of golf throughout their careers.”

Last September the 260-year-old club voted to extend membership to women for the first time.  Marking an historic move that garnered worldwide attention as well as 85% of the current members’ 2400 votes.

Also joining Princess Anne on the list are Renee Powell, Belle Robertson, Lally Segard and Louise Suggs, who co-founded the LPGA.

“It is an honour and a privilege for The Royal and Ancient Golf Club to welcome these remarkable women as honorary members.  The Princess Royal enjoys a strong bond with Scotland and has shown great energy and commitment to developing sport through her work in the Olympic movement,” said Macgregor.
