Tiger’s Race to Beat Sam Snead’s 82

Tiger’s Race to Beat Sam Snead’s 82
For most of the season all anybody has talked about in terms of Tiger Woods is his failure to capture another major win.  With the Nike great stalled at number 14 since 2008 it’s easy to focus on this lack of another major, but that doesn’t mean he’s had any old run-of-the-mill season.

As the first of four FedEx Cup playoff events begins today, Woods states he is more than happy with his performances this year and after racking up five tournament wins, the 37-year-old is hopeful he can soon break another record.

Just as important to him as Nicklaus’ 18 majors, Woods is now confident and in prime position to tackle Sam Snead’s best of 82 PGA Tour wins. He currently sits just below Snead in the record books with 79.

“I tell you what, I never thought I would ever get there this quick,” Woods said in a press conference Wednesday. “One of the things I’m most proud of is winning five or more tournaments 10 years in there. That’s one of the stats that I look at as one of the ones I’m really proud of.  This is one of those years.”

So while the rest of us might like to focus on what Woods hasn’t done this year those in the know are quick to remind us he’s still one of the greatest to ever play the game.

“His lack of winning a major is the only thing talked about, which I think is sad,” said fellow PGA Tour player Bill Haas. “I think it’s ignorant.  But that’s what we are basing his year on. He may even say, ‘Oh, I’m disappointed because I didn’t win a major. But he’s not winning the smaller events.  He’s winning the WGCs and Bay Hill.  And yes, it makes what he’s doing that much more impressive, absolutely.”
