U.S. Women’s Open 2013: Playing Smart on the Greens will be Key

U.S. Women’s Open 2013: Playing Smart on the Greens will be Key
As the 68th annual U.S. Women’s Open commences today, 156 of the world’s best golfers will begin competing for the third major title of the season and a sizeable $585,000 purse.

The Sebonak Golf Club in Southampton, New York will host this year’s event, the first time a championship has been played at the course since it opened in 2006.

Designed by Jack Nicklaus and Tom Doak, the setting couldn’t be more beautiful.  Nestled against the Peconic Bay the course features wide fairways and spacious bunkers.  With many speculating that the real test to the Pros will be with Sebonak’s complex greens and pin positions.

“People are talking about these greens being very big, I actually find them very small,” said Suzann Pettersen.  “Because if you're looking at the sections you're hitting it into and where you really want to be, they're fairly small and you've got to be really precise.”

South Korea’s Inbee Park will be hoping for a record-breaking victory this weekend.  If she is able to secure the tournament she will become the only player to win the first three majors of the year since there were at least four in a season.
