Could Speedgolf Make your Rounds a Bit more Interesting?

by Maura Hutchinson

Do you like running and enjoy golf too? Then Speedgolf might be the latest form of exercise you’re going to love.

One of the biggest hurdles in bringing new players to the game of golf and getting them to stay interested is the sheer amount of time it takes to play a round. With many people stating they just aren’t able to spend the time needed to really get into the sport.

Speedgolf looks to eliminate this problem while helping you get super fit. The sport takes on 18 holes of golf while running between each stroke. Speed and stamina reign supreme here with players combining their stroke score with their running time. To be good at it you have to be fairly quick at running and super quick at taking your shots.

Players have remarked that it makes the golf portion less stressful as you don’t have the time to lament over a bad shot or the opportunity to faff over a set up. You need to just strike and run!

During the rounds each golfer carries up to seven clubs around the course in a hand held bag as they sprint. Most players prefer to carry even less. Last month the Speedgolf World Championships were held at Chicago’s Glen Golf Club in America.

The event saw Speedgolfers from all around the world competing for a prize purse worth $40,000. This year it was American Jamie Young who came out on top. Playing with only a driver, putter, utility club, 8-iron, pitching wedge and sand wedge, the 52-year-old finished two rounds of 72 and 77 in times of 50 and 51 minutes respectively.

Young explained his routine to the PGA.com after his incredible win stating, “I probably take a couple seconds over each shot.”  Adding, “Because I’m not a fast runner I’ve got to have a very fast routine. When I’m hitting a drive, it’s a quick look and I’m gone.  I’m running down the fairway before it even lands.”
