Cobra Pioneers 3D Printing with RADSPEED Irons

Cobra Golf is a name synonymous with golf innovation. For years they have sought to push the boundaries of traditional golf hardware design and technology to ensure the modern golfer is catered to in a way like never before. In 2021 they are continuing their drive to modernise engineering techniques, employing 3D printing technology in the creation of the new RADSPEED Irons.

A Unique Partnership

In 2019 Cobra Golf teamed up with HP and Parmatech to explore how 3D printing could transform golf equipment manufacturing. Over the course of 8 months, Cobra engineers were able to develop 35 different design iterations, using the incredible HP Metal Jet technology.

The result was the Limited Edition KING Supersport-35 putter, released in November 2020. From their first project, Cobra realised the absolute benefit of this new technology that allows them to design prototypes, test multiple iterations and bring products to the market faster than ever before.

Jose Miraflor, Vice President of Marketing for Cobra Golf explained at the time, “During the development of the KING Supersport-35 Putter, we saw immediate benefits from this process, including design freedom, rapid design iteration, and high-quality parts that meet our economic demands. 3D printing is accelerating design innovation, and this breakthrough putter will help usher in a new era for the sporting equipment industry at large.”

Simplify your Game in 2021

Fast forward to 2021 and Cobra is leveraging this new technology to help improve your iron game by introducing the new RADSPEED Irons. Available in variable and one length options, Cobra states these are their most advanced irons to date.

The RADSPEED Irons feature the first-ever 3D printed nylon medallion, utilising an intricate lattice design structure that helps save weight and fine-tune feel. A reduction in weight helps to lower CoG and dampen harsh vibrations at impact. A combination that will garner users a softer fell as well as great feedback.

RAD Runs in the Family

As with the RADSPEED metal woods, Radial Weighting is the new technology powered by Cobra to help transform your game in 2021. Maximising performance through the strategic placement of weight, relative to CoG, Radial Weighting further optimises speed and forgiveness.

So how exactly does it work? Well, Cobra engineers figured out that by placing more mass low on the heel and toe (the two furthest points from the CoG whilst still remaining low on the iron head) they could lower CoG and simultaneously improve the stability of the clubhead.

The RADSPEED Irons feature a 10-gram screw in weight located in the toe, as well as 3-grams of mass positioned in the heel to create the perfect combo of low CoG and high MOI. Meaning you can expect fast ball speed and high launch. For the ultimate game-improvement iron experience, the 10-grams of screw-in weight can be adjusted +/- 6 grams in 2-gram increments during a custom fit.

With a firm focus on aesthetics and feel, Cobra engineers have truly outdone themselves with the RADSPEED range. A unique Carbon Fibre Topline creates a sleek and modern look at address, whilst also saving 2 grams of weight to help improve launch and spin. The brand’s exclusive PWRSHELL Technology has also been employed to give golfers increased speed and high launch, even on stronger lofted irons. The forged PWRSHELL Face insert is created from high-strength 17-4 stainless steel, allowing for a thinner and more flexible face design that increases ball speed on and around the sweet spot.

Variable or One Length – Take your Pick

In addition to all the incredible technologies mentioned already, the Variable Length RADSPEED Irons feature progressive head shapes, utilising two-piece construction on the 4-7 irons and one-piece construction on 8-SW. V grooves on the long irons have been used for reduced spin, while U grooves on the short irons have been used for added spin. Different hosel lengths (shorter in the long irons and taller in the wedges) have been employed to further optimise distance, launch characteristics and accuracy.

Each RADSPEED One Length Iron has been specifically designed to match the length and weighting of a 7-iron. This helps to promote one repeatable set up and swing, as well as consistent gapping and trajectories throughout the set.
