Read on to find out who’s won our coveted Gold, Silver and Bronze awards, as well as important info you should know before purchasing your new fairway wood.

Things to Consider When Picking New Golf Fairway Woods When You’re a High Handicapper:

Should my fairway woods match my driver?
The simple answer to this is no. There is no reason that you have to buy the matching fairway woods to your driver. While you might prefer to do that, it is also possible to find a better fit for your game from a different brand or the same brand but a different range.

How many golf fairway woods do I need?
There really isn’t a simple one size fits all answer to this one. To begin, most golfers benefit from using a 3 and 5 wood. These are the fairway woods you can expect to find if you are purchasing a package set. But don’t be afraid to start adding to this set up if you want to, or conversely taking away a fairway wood if you find you’re not using it.

What Loft Should I be going for?
As a general rule of thumb, the faster your swing speed, the less loft you will need to launch the ball high. For high handicappers and those new to the game, you are most likely working with a slower swing speed. Therefore, a fairway wood with more loft and a lower centre of gravity will help you to hit the ball higher without too much spin. Just be aware that while a low spin model might get you more launch, they can also be less forgiving on mishits.

Clubhead design
Fairway woods featuring a clubface with variable thickness will offer players more stability and forgiveness, the perfect combination for high handicappers! A wider sole design will also produce an increased MOI. This creates a more stable clubhead and helps to reduce twisting on off-centre strikes.

Adjustability

In recent years, more and more golf brands are designing adjustable fairway woods, giving players the ability to adjust their club’s loft, lie and face angle as and when is needed. This is a great option for golfers looking to optimise playability in different conditions by effectively allowing you to set up one club in 10 different ways!

Custom Fit
Having your golf clubs custom fit to your unique swing can reveal game-changing improvements for your overall golf score. In terms of your fairway woods, a custom fit session will look at your current clubs and assess where your strengths and weaknesses lie. Every aspect of your game will be analysed to ensure versatility from the tee to the fairway, with confidence and control at the forefront. Book your custom fit appointment with GolfOnline today and start reaping the on-course rewards immediately!

9. Callaway Big Bertha B21

The Big Bertha B21 has been specifically designed for those players who find it hard to hit a fairway wood. Callaway states it’s their easiest to launch fairway wood, designed to give you more distance any way you swing it. Featuring the legendary Big Bertha shaping and increased offset, this club is a forgiving model that can take the slice or big miss out of your game.

Pros:
Tons of forgiveness and confidence inspiring at address. Custom fit available.

Cons:
If you don’t have a slice, the offset might not be right for you.

Verdict:
Overall, the Big Bertha B21 is an impressive addition to the Callaway range. It looks great and performs well, especially if you tend to slice the ball. The oversized head will inspire confidence at address, and will also give players incredible forgiveness, even on off centre strikes. We definitely recommend giving this one a try.

This club is a real beauty. Offering the uncompromising style, design and performance you’d expect from Honma. Adjustable face, lie and loft angle options will help you further optimise this fairway wood to your unique swing. But with premium performance comes a premium price tag. If money is no object than this could be your best choice.

7. Srixon ZX

2. Callaway Mavrik Max
GolfInstore’s manager Kevin has awarded the Callaway Mavrik Max silver,

“A slightly bigger head on this club will give the golfer who struggles hitting a fairway wood more confidence. The weight is more on the heel and towards the back of this club. This will help launch the ball higher and will help keep the ball straighter.”

The Mavrik Max features the largest and most forgiving head in the Mavrik range. Interchangeable weights in the sole at centre back help to promote easy launch, and at the heel help to promote a draw. By combining a high MOI construction with an advanced A.I. face design, Callaway have developed a dramatic increase in stability that makes the Max extraordinarily forgiving and easy to hit.

Pros:
Easy to launch. Extremely forgiving. Incredible adjustability. Custom fit available.
