Victory Roundup - Callaway Switch proves Epic for Molinari

by Maura Hutchinson

It was an epic week for Francesco Molinari, culminating in the Italian golfer picking up his third PGA Tour title on Sunday at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill.

The current Open Champion began Sunday’s final round five-strokes behind the leader, but an impressive 8-under 64 helped Molinari surge to the top of the leaderboard. Beating England’s Matt Fitzpatrick by two. A result the King would surely have been proud of.

“Coming from Italy, we weren’t exposed to that much golf, but obviously Arnie [Arnold Palmer] was such a global icon and this tournament was one that we watched, my brother and myself, at home many times,” the 36-year-old told reporters afterwards.

Molinari has had an impressive few months on both the European and PGA Tours. Winning three times in his last 12 starts and being a key player on this year’s winning Ryder Cup team. All of that success was achieved with a mixed bag of equipment. But Sunday’s win comes less than one week after Molinari announced he was signing with Callaway.

Last week the Italian released a statement explaining, “I am joining Callaway because I’m so impressed by their equipment. More than anything, I’m looking forward to playing the new Epic Flash Driver and the Chrome Soft X Golf Ball. The ball speed gains that I’m getting from the driver are unbelievable. And this golf ball is the best one that I’ve ever played. The performance from tee-to-green, especially the feel and control, is exactly what I want.”
