is proving he still has what it takes to win when it matters, securing his fourth victory of 2019 on Sunday at the WGC – HSBC Champions in Shanghai.
McIlroy’s first win of the season, and third WGC title, came on the first playoff hole against American Xander Schauffele, after both players finished on 19-under 269. Schauffele was eager to become the first player to successfully defend the title, but McIlroy dashed his hopes with an impressive final two bogey-free rounds and a birdie putt on the first playoff hole.
“Bogey-free on the weekend. I thought it would be enough to get the job done,” McIlroy stated afterwards.
Adding, “You have to give credit to Xander. He’s been battling the flu and he played unbelievably well.”
McIlroy’s excellent form seems to be following him from last season, he was the 2019 FedEx Cup Champion, as well as the PGA Tour Player of the Year. Yesterday also marked his fourth win in 15 starts. The 30-year-old told reporters on Sunday he credits his age and knowing “I don’t have as much time left as I used to when I was 20,” with his recent surge of success.
“The four wins this year have been wonderful. THE PLAYERS Championship, RBC Canadian Open, THE TOUR Championship to win the FedExCup, big events,” McIlroy said. “But more than that, I think it is the consistency that I'm bringing week-in, week-out. Even if I don't have my best stuff, at least give myself a chance.”
A great start to what many hope will be another successful year for the TaylorMade player. See all the gear McIlroy used at the Sheshan International Golf Club below.
