Victory Roundup – Unexpected winners on the PGA and European Tours this Sunday

As the excitement builds towards this week’s Open Championship two little known golfers won on Sunday securing their own invites to Carnoustie. Check out all the action from the Scottish Open and the John Deere Classic and learn more about this past weekend’s winners.

South Africa’s Brandon Stone stormed into contention in Aberdeen on Sunday. Cruising to a four-shot victory over England’s Eddie Pepperell as he became the 29th player on the European Tour to shoot a round of 60.

The 25-year old’s amazing final round put him just one stroke outside a record-breaking 59 on Tour. But Stone was happy enough to gain the win and a spot at this year’s Open.

“The first time I knew I had the opportunity [to card a 59] was when I was walking on to the 18th green,” Stone told reporters afterwards. Adding, “To stand here as the Scottish Open champion is really incredible.”

See the gear Stone used to secure his third European Tour victory, including his colourful and patriotic FJ golf shoes:

Over on the PGA Tour American Michael Kim earned his first Tour title at the John Deere Classic in Illinois. Finishing 27-under par to win by a record 8-strokes and gain his first invite to the Open Championship.

Beyond being able to play in this year’s major, the 23-year-old wakes up today $1 million richer and with a two-year exemption on Tour. All-in-all not a bad week for a golfer who missed five of his last six cuts.

“I’m just super thankful to my parents, team, coaches, friends and family. It’s been a tough first half of the year but to finish off this means a lot,” Kim told reporters on Sunday. Adding, “The last couple of weeks I felt my game was getting there, I just got off to a great start on Thursday and kept it going.”
