Phil Mickelson Wedge Released to Tour Players at Valero Texas Open

Phil Mickelson Wedge Released to Tour Players at Valero Texas Open
Callaway Golf has released its Mack Daddy 2 PM-Grind Wedge to Tour players this week at the Valero Texas Open. Designed by the brand’s master craftsman Roger Cleveland with pivotal input from 5-time major winner, Phil Mickelson.

Known for his impressive short-game, Mickelson went to Cleveland ahead of last year’s PGA Championship looking for a wedge design with a higher toe to help him hit flop shots without the fear of missing the ball in the rough.

Cleveland came up with a prototype featuring a uniquely shaded head with a higher toe for greater surface area as well as grooves that run all the way across the face.

“When we were in the process of commercializing this wedge, Phil suggested that we should put the groove all the way to the toe,” explained Cleveland.  “Instead of having a standard framing of a groove where you don’t have a groove near the toe, we extended it all the way.  It looks like you can flip pancakes with it.”

Mickelson also suggested shifting the centre of gravity higher in the head to help increase spin.

“We made this high toe wedge last year,” said the Callaway player.  “The first time I used it was at the USPGA Championship and my short game was phenomenal – it was the best it had been all year.”

With more than 70 of the wedges being sent to Valero this week will anyone else be following in Mickelson’s footsteps and changing to the Mack Daddy 2 PM-Grind Wedge ahead of next month’s Masters?

This latest Callaway design will be available to buy from May 2015.
